Semi & Full Contact Kickboxing - What Is It?

The origins of ECKA kickboxing are more Western than Thai Boxing. The main techniques are the punches from Western Boxing and the kicks from Eastern Tae Kwon Do and Karate. We use a semi-side stance with a boxer's guard. Throws and locks using Aikido, Judo and Jui Jitsu principles are also covered but to a lesser degree. Knee strikes, elbow strikes and forehead strikes are studied but not used with partners until beyond black belt status. How hard you spar is decided by you - we are not expecting anyone to be in a situation they do not like.

The biggest shock to new students is how far they can push themselves when motivated correctly. We provide that motivation in a way that you really need to experience to understand. As professional and experienced fitness instructors we can recognise people's limits and take you as close as you have ever been, using a variety of techniques such as psychological focus and the army's 'drill instructor' approach. We learn each student's motivating factor and progressively increase the desire as you advance.

Our students will tell you that this martial art will get you super fit. You don't need to be fit to start - that's the reason most people join. We teach Monday to Thursday and Saturdays too - you can attend as many and which ever classes you like. Burn around 600 calories per class, at beginner to mid level (quote: Tim Sheet, Muscle & Fitness Magazine, May 2005). The longer you train, the fitter you get, and the more calories you burn per hour. If you find the gym repetitive or boring then call or e-mail us and book yourself in on a free introduction. Our complete workout is always changing and will work every aspect of muscular and cardiovascular fitness.

These classes are available from age 13 upwards; no level of fitness is required to begin. Our student base is approximately 50:50 male/female.
